Alterations- a dress from India

I had an interesting project this month- alteration of traditional dress from India.
I learned that a traditional cut was very simple - rectangle pieces of fabric sewn together. The dress didn’t have any darts, armhole, neckline, or sleeve cap, however it had beautiful embroidery. I decided to change the cut and add all missing elements such as:
Bust darts – for more flattering fit
Neckline- for inserting the collar more easily
Armholes- to fit the sleeve better
Add  sleeve gussets and sleeve cup for the best sleeve fit
Shorten dress skirt  for a custom height.
I really enjoyed working on the project  and I especially liked the final dress version.

Alteration Ideas

Ready-to-wear clothes have the potential to be altered to fit a custom taste or personal needs.
So, here is a couple of ideas on how to alter a pair of pants and a scarf.
*
I loved the pants and especially the pockets, but I really didn't like how long they were.
Problem solved: I made a pair of capris which I will wear a lot while traveling. :)
*
I loved the scarf pattern and color, but I hated how wide it was. :(
Problem solved: I have a nice scarf now and I can use the second half of the scarf for something else.

Wedding Dress Alterations

A lot of brides prefer to have a dress with a long train, and those dresses are beautiful. Unfortunately, dresses with long trains are not very comfortable to wear during the whole wedding day, especially when dancing. One of the most popular wedding dress alterations is creating a certain type of bustle so a train can be hooked up to the dress to allow more freedom of movement.

Here is one version of how you can alter a wedding dress...
