I had an interesting project this month- alteration of traditional
dress from India.
I learned that a traditional cut was very simple - rectangle
pieces of fabric sewn together. The dress didn’t have any darts, armhole,
neckline, or sleeve cap, however it had beautiful embroidery. I decided to
change the cut and add all missing elements such as:
Bust darts – for more flattering fit
Neckline- for inserting the collar more easily
Armholes- to fit the sleeve better
Add sleeve gussets and sleeve cup for the best
sleeve fit
Shorten dress skirt for a custom height.
I really enjoyed working on the project and I especially liked the final dress
version.
